Yeah, as soon as I saw a post about it on SoE Forums pleaing for them to step in and help with the hacker... The writing was on the wall. Temerity should of know it would be the end of the server when that lvl 1 toon poped in on them. It really is a shame.

Well for starters I highly doubt someone wrote there own app to decrypt, and encrypt SendMessage specifically for EQMac. In order for a level 1 to zone into PoTime you would have had to block the key/level check packet. Sounds like someone updated MQ2 and had updated the info needed to get atleast get eqsendmessage to work. If they were able to atleast do this, they would also have other hacks I am sure. Unless EQMac is different than Live, Key/level check isn't stored clientside. Just a thought anyway.
Interesting theory... However, wouldn't it be easier to just put a 9090 (nop to block packet) in the eqgame.exe instead in the function that receives the packet you are referring to?
In the 10 years eqmac has been active, I never heard of anyone creating a working MQ2 for it and it seems unlikely someone would go through all that work ( and believe me, it took months to code it ) just to use it for abuse. So you can count me out for that reason alone, not to mention the fact that I do have a reputation for being honest that I don't want tarnished...
Is it possible that someone without access to the MQ2 source could have somehow hooked into it and called sendmessage or even blocked packets? Sure anything is possible, but I will maintain that it's not plausible that a person with that much knowledge of the inner workings of eqgame as well as MQ2 would spend their time grieving others...
What's more likely is that someone created a third party tool that could /zone and had the capability to write to the client memory and then a malicious user of that program used it to zone into pot.
In fact I'm pretty sure this hack was done on a Mac and not using the pc client at all, I know there was a warp/zone app for Mac, long before I got MQ2 working.
In any case, MQ2 by itself has no functionality whatsoever to let a user do the kind of things you are describing, and furthermore even if it could be hacked to do so, it still couldn't be blamed for the eqmac shutdown just as no one can blame Microsoft for excelviruses just cause they created excel...

The only thing i'd point out, is the mq2 just arrived to mac and this happened. Coincidence? possibly, but I doubt it.
Why? because there is so much old source code for a variety of plugins that could be devastating for the mac.
That said, there are plenty of EQMac trainers out there that are independent of MQ2. In either event, it was inevitable, a non-updated client that has horrible security is just too inviting for folks.

Why? because there is so much old source code for a variety of plugins that could be devastating for the mac.
That said, there are plenty of EQMac trainers out there that are independent of MQ2. In either event, it was inevitable, a non-updated client that has horrible security is just too inviting for folks.

Well of course you need the mq2 source, but are you the only person in the world that has it? or did you give it to someone else? I have a feeling one of the admins you put your trust in over at the "Other" site betrayed you. Or someone put surveillance on you to steal the beloved mq2 source code. Or someone sent you an email with a click here to view the britney spears sex tap and you installed spyware to steal the source.
Point being, I seriously doubt you were the only person with working mq2 source. I.E. the other site build a launcher for Macroquest.exe. Did you only give out a compiled version to them?

If I was hacked the source would have been released by now...
The only 2 people besides me that had access to the compile runs another site yes, and for that reason alone it would make no sense in first investing a lot of money on a working compile (I don't run a charity) just to use it for grieving people, and then see the revenue from subscriptions dry up? I don't think anyone would do something like that... It's would be bad for business. And I promise you, no one is happy about the eqmac shutdown over at mmobugs, if I where to entertain conspiracy theories I would say there was more to gain from a shutdown by their competitors than by them...

It was MMOBugs with the dagger, rope, lead pipe, candlestick, revolver, and wrench in the Kitchen, hall, study, dining room, billiard room, conservatory, library, ball room. Its always MMOBugs. If it wasn't MQ2 it was an MMOBugs member using another hack. I don't know what is wrong with those people and I don't care.

Lol, if Code Compile is involved, shenanigans were definitely involved. Although, I got nothing bad to say about Village Idiot, good guy.
Now, if indeed Code Compiler did get his hands on eqmac mq2 source, there is no doubt in my mind who caused this. Code Compiler has a reputation of blatantly hacking and advertising hacks in public.

I would practically bet my life that it had nothing to do with mq2. I can't remember what forum I read it on, but I remember reading that someone had created hacks for the mac that were even more dangerous than anything available to mq2. I would bet it was that or newagesoldier.

I'd like to note that mq2 had some of the most devastating hacks in the early era of Everquest. Not just zoning and warping.

Yeah it's that "if" problem though... and I trust the people who had it wouldn't want to risk a shutdown cause it would hurt subscriptions... we discussed active hacks and the possible repercussions many times and it was always agreed that we would never compile or let anyone compile those plugins for the reasons I outlined. Forget this theory about mmobugs devs doing the hacks or even releasing any of those plugins it just wasn't the case.
I do think the fact that eqmule was able to get the windows client working again (especially as fast as he did) after the patch scared them. The nail in the coffin had to be the griefing in plane of time though. At that point if I was them I think I would have just thrown up my hands and said fuck it too if I was them. I am well aware of the hacks that have been around via mq2 and those hacks were discussed when it was stated the hacks available on the mac were worse. Like I said I have no idea if they did or didn't see the light of day and I know the person who was developing them would not have wanted them used that way and that rampantly but people are people and when you give stupid people power, they abuse the shit out of it.

Yeah, eqisdead is right about eqmule scaring SoE by patching the windows client so quickly. I think they were just looking for a way out when eqmule circumvented that patch.
Either way, whats done is done. I still hold eqmule in high regard and still my favorite mq2 dev. The man has some crazy skills and the fact he patched the windows client and got a working mq2 on mac is quite the feat. Even if no one hacked it and there wasn't a windows client, EQMac was heading to dumpsville. It was just a matter of time, it was running a Free 2 Play model with absolutely no chance of gaining any revenue. Some proponents of EQMac are saying they were going to buy EQNext and now aren't... What a load of Shit! If anything them closing EQMac will make them want to try EQNext more... lol.

I don't know about more lol. There was talk in the beginning that EQNext would support the mac and apparently not a lot has been said since so who knows. I do want to say I meant no disrespect to eqmule, lol as far as I am concerned he is da man! I think the fact that he had the ability to do what he did and much more, and chose to take the high road to try to maintain things as much as they could be on the server was something a very moral and upstanding person would do. I think he is a great person and I totally respect and give him mad props.

Interesting idea, SOE found a scapegoat to close a server they'd been wanting to close. Now they look blameless.
Yup, didn't get nearly the amount of backlash like last time. All the vets that kept the server open were turned off by all the F2P characters that invaded the server and destroying the community anyhow. If anything the vets are more mad about them making the server F2P instead of subscription based then it getting shut down.
