I don't know if I'll always feel this way, but I find updating KA .ini's to be really enjoyable and forces me to really think about how I want the character to be played. Different strokes, etc. :)

I really like the color bars that make which toon you're on instantly distinguishable.

This might be something you've already tried, but make sure you're not hiding file extensions in Windows, so that you're not accidentally creating the file "ingame.cfg.txt" or something like that.

I could be wrong but I believe most (all?) plugins and MQ itself are C++, and Lua is also used to great effect for some addons. I've also seen some yaml and xml knowledge being useful.

Are you sure it's not like, and ordinary EverQuest keybind? It's bound by default to, Q, I think, but it can be changed. AFAIK, neither Kiss nor MQ will change keybinds by default.
