That's an interesting question. I've thought of some interesting things you could do using that...but I'd bet on server side, since it uses NPC pathing logic to guide you.

On the other hand...at least a part of it must be client side, since it displays only for you. What would be interesting for this is that if you could read that data, you could conceivably use that to provide an NPC style pathing logic...
 
I agree with TheZ. I'd assume its a mix of both - client sending the server a "ping" type packet to locate the PC by his updated movement packet.

The pathing logic would be an INSANE amount of coding to do considering some zones are pathed differently and also depending on the terrain.
