So what's an Everquest emulator?
Everquest emulators allow you to play Everquest on other servers, servers
that players like yourself set up. The players make up their own rules for
the game, their own quests, their own items. Some servers have up to 100
players on them. There are also servers that
allow anybody to do anything, as soon as you log in they will make you a GM. You can fly, visit any zone, summon the Sleeper, run as fast as a 100k horse,
become invulnerable, summon
your favorite items and kill any monster you like.
For example, you can log in, summon a Fungi Tunic and your epic weapon, make
yourself level 65 with 100 AA points, and then summon Tunare and make her fight
Cazic-Thule right in the middle of Freeport. Or kill the Gods yourself, or
summon a giant Orc named "Smashy" and have him sack Rivervale, or whatever you
want. Your imagination is the limit.

An excerpt from the guide:
"Choose a server and
play! These are all player-run servers, some of them are for testing and
screwing around on (make your character level 100, summon the best equipment,
change your name/race at will, become a GM, etc.), and others are for a true
game - like normal EQ servers but with huge differences (different story lines,
new quests, different XP gain, better customer service (without a doubt hehe),
and so on). These are usually called Legit servers, and our favorite right now
is Guildwars."
