Discussion - Buying a New Gaming Computer - Opinions (1 Viewer)

6700 is a fine CPU/16GB RAM is plenty for normal games multiple EQ boxes do not count :)

Only question is the GPU
1060 3GB version is sort of okay assuming you plan on staying with HD resolution (1920x1080).

Although, I would get the 1070 version ($200 more) which does max every game at 1920x1080 and should be more future proof. Of course you could switch the GPUs later on...

Another question is the Power Supply hopefully it is at least a Bronze 80+ one. (If you want to go hardcore and learn everything about power supplies then visit http://www.jonnyguru.com/)

An intriguing option is the Intel Skull Canyon NUC kit (add your own M2. SSD and RAM) . Skull Canyon is small but quite powerful: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIAAZU4418437

However it will not match the 1060 in graphics speed so you do pay for the portability.

The power supply seems a little weak.

Yeah 500W is a bit on the low side but adequate if you stay with the 1060, the big question is whether it is a no-name fail within a year power supply or at least somewhat branded power supply.

A no-name 500W is rarely real 500W and often much less.

THe picture shows Corsair on the case, so perhaps the computer does use Corsair power supplies which generally have a fine reputation.

So I would inquire the seller what power supply they use.

It is a corsair case. I can swap out my 800W PSU from my old computer too if the wiring isn't a total pain to move around.

My buddy was in this spot about 6 months ago. He also did not want to screw with building, so he bought a Falcon. Very happy with it, trouble free with a good warranty. But you definitely pay for the name and reputation.

IMO the key is that processor or better. i7-6700 should do just fine. Just don't go any lower than that.

I got a deal on a 980 GTX instead of buying a new 1060. no regrets.

My Corsair is 600w. No problems 2 years in.

basically the same specs as my new laptop. the 1070 is sweet gpu also i would make sure the MB supports the new nvme / pci-e SSD suuuuper fast

That's nice but a laptop doesn't work for my needs. I have 3 monitors and need the computer for my graphics work as well and its all built around a desktop sitting under my desk.

I am looking to buy a new gaming computer. I really have no interest anymore in building my own. i just want to slap in my extra SSD drive then throw it under my desk and forget about it.

This is the machine I am thinking of getting.

check the bestbuy in your area they often have 'returns' for a couple hundred bucks off that retain the warranty. then just buy the vid card and ssd you want.
check craigslist, some stupid deals there if you live in a decent sized city
http://www.xoticpc.com , couple friends have bought custom laptops their PC's look decent price but that amazon one is pretty good price IMO.

Basically when I have to help the family I buy laptops and build the PC as you save a couple hundred bucks and it takes an hour or two to actually build them and you dont get stupid bloatware.
The hard part is deciding what to buy, now I just go to reddit for whatever the hot build is and buy those components from newegg/amazon whichever is cheaper for the component and they show up in 2-3 days.

I have bought like 10 Win8 keys from this guy over the years, there are probably cheaper ones but it is already dirt cheap and I had no issues.
