EverQuest PC Building & Laptop Guide

EverQuest PC Building & Laptop Guide

Everquest is a legacy game. Most builds you see online are tailored for modern games where they cut costs on the CPU and RAM, just so they can blow the budget on a nice video card. EQ requires the exact opposite: it barely notices your video card and instead puts load on your CPU and RAM. As games grow more video card dependent, the need for Everquest-specific PC builds (especially for multiboxers) increases.

If you've never built a PC, it's much easier than anyone would lead you to believe. If you're smart enough to run KissAssist or put together LEGO's, you have the intelligence required to slap together computer parts.

You should follow a general step-by-step guide when building your PC. If you prefer text (with videos when helpful) I highly recommend TechReport's guide here. If you prefer pure video, we like this one:

A VR ready build I'm considering. I went with Intel over AMD to save a bit of power, and of course quad-core for multiboxing. Stock cooler is fine. I prefer MSI's Z170A SLI Plus motherboard over the MSI Z170-A Pro, it's $15 more but has better audio and a USB-C port. DDR4 RAM is insanely cheap right now, $57 for 16GB. SSD for Windows and games, and the reliable WD Blue for media. Gold rated PSU that's ranked highly at johnnyguru, plus it's SLI ready incase you ever want to take full advantage of the motherboard. The fractal design case isn't needed, but it's pretty and has great reviews. And in case I ever get an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive, the GTX 970 Gaming 4G is VR Ready.

Why no browsers? I like to have a browser up to look at quest/task guides on alla's while I'm going through them. I understand it takes up some bandwidth, but I'm only running 5 clients (6 max), so I don't see it as THAT terrible.

I was looking at something like this to run my emu server on for testing and boxing stuff as a stand alone separate box. I would slap in a high end video card i have laying around.

I have 4 of the z200 same workstation all i7s as my main boxes now, they are nice but power supply concerns, same as yours there. All the Z series so have to be careful on video card upgrade. (I swapped 550TI's into mine with zero problems)

open a browser and look at the cpu and mem usage spiking for no reason, all the shit going on in the background fucks with the system constantly, means less cycles to go around for your boxes.

That one comes with a 3 yr warranty. Not too bad for an extra box on a refurbished machine.

That would be a wonderful post /guide by itself. Listing settings and tweaks done to best maximize the number of running instances.

He is running SSDs. What he doesn't have in RAM should be effectively made up for in fast paging, as long as the page file is allocated to the SSD.

From what I remember I could get tuned down boxes to ~600MB of RAM per instance, without fully turning off absolutely everything. Which means ~29gigs of RAM, with the extra 13gigs easily paged off to SSD I imagine. I bet the performance would actually be pretty tolerable, too.

That's not too bad at 400 bucks. I tend to think of Xeons getting more price effective on the high end, with that being a rather low one, but it's not bad.

If you don't need the copy of Win7 it comes with, I do think you could beat it pretty handily with assembly new, though.
    Mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128565 - $55
    CPU: http://www.amazon.com/FD9590FHHKWOF-Fx-9590-8-core-Black-Edition/dp/B00DGGW3MI%3Fpsc%3D1%26SubscriptionId%3DAKIAJM4UVF 4RQCUWVBQA%26tag%3Dcpubenchmark-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165 953%26creativeASIN%3DB00DGGW3MI - ~$225
    Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226757 - $50 for 16Gigs
    SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211983 - $38
    Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817438038 - $17
    Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811208059 - $20

If my maths are right, that's $405.
So, generally speaking a ~35% faster multithread CPU (40% single threaded), double the RAM (and faster, the Z600 maxes at 1333mhz), on SSD instead of HDD, for the same price.

Depends how much you want to work at it. I think it's a reasonably upgrade to build it new over buying the refurb, but it's close enough the headache avoidance is awfully tempting.

Redbot is right, 48 on 16 is tight, I had 32gb installed on the i7s that had 48. sorry. But I can get eq down to 300mb per as well so conceivably you can do 48, very laggy but 48

    - - - Updated - - -

now after much testing for rock solid, I do 12 or 18 clients per pc with 16 or 24 gb ram on a quad core i7... I can and do run for weeks at a time!

Is there an appreciable difference between the i5 and the i7? I run an i5 now and it's decent for 14 but not great with 16gb of ram. My ram usage is about 700-800mb per so I'm at 50% ish percent ram usage. Ideally I want to run 2 groups doing crap and then my raiding toon with his porting bot in raids.

I usually buy Dell, but I ended up with with 4 Hp 200Zs too. Brand is not as important as form factor! Yeah SFF or Slim cases are cool in theory, but horrible in practice! Get a mid or full tower so you get a bigger stock PSU and regular video cards will fit it!
