Something that has bugged me for a while now, what makes a crit so damn special? Does it slow or stun the opponent? Damage output seems to be higher in some cases but sometimes seems to be about the same.

It's bonus damage. Yes sometimes you have criticals that are lower then your normal hit but in those cases, you would have had half the damage anyhow.

For example:

Max hit is 100.

You can crit for 200 damage. (100 base hit)

You can also crit for 30 damage (Which would have been 15 without the crit.)

Couldn't have said it better myself

My understanding is that crits are about twice the damage, crippling is about three times the damage.

As has been said, it's a bonus on what damage would otherwise have been dealt out. Just bad luck if you crit on a low damage hit.

Depending on your class, there are some AAs which improve crit performance
